Devices now a days ship with top of the line displays they claim to provide best experience they have massive resolution with PPI more than 500 PPI but there are different manufacturers give different displays in their devices.
Like apple has retina display or Htc has super LCD3 Samsung chooses super AMOLED for most of its phones. So how do they work and which one is better. There may be seem like a lot but there are only two true types of display technologies viz LCDs and AMOLEDs
First lets consider a standard LCD display, the display is made up of small liquid crystals which are lit by small electrical charge the illumination is very low and that's why needs backlight. So every LCD panel has a backlight.
But then what is IPS LCD
IPS stands for in-plane switching in this
the crystals are electrically excited is different and the orientation of the crystals array is rotated. This improves greatly the viewing angles and color reproduction
What is super LCD³ which HTC uses?
In standard LCD displays there is a gap between the digitizer and the display itself, in super LCD this gap is removed and reduces glare and allows much more sleek phones. The numbers LCD² LCD³ are the developments in the display technology. For eg super LCD³ are more brighter than LCD².
Now lets talk about AMOLED
AMOLED stands for active matrix organic light emmiting diodes. It is an OLED panel with a film of semiconductor which allows it to activate quickly which reduces flickr. Every pixel in the display is actually an individual LED. The LEDs light up of their own and don't require backlight
Then what is super AMOLED
Super AMOLED is similar to super LCD the gap between the digitizer and display is removed to achieve a single glass panel. Super AMOLED also are more efficient than standard AMOLED displays
What about retina display then
Although it may sound revolutionary Retina display is not actually a different display technology apple used the term to describe the displays after the launch of iPhone 4 the phone had resolution of 960 x 640 pixel on 3.5-inch IPS LCD screen, resulting in 330 PPI. Now the human eye cannot distinguish pixels after 330ppi that's why they used this term all Apple devices with retina display are actually IPS LCD displays with PPI more than 330
So which one is better
There are pros and cons of every display technology like
LCDs have most accurate color reproduction where as AMOLED tends to oversaturate colors. Due to backlighting LCDs can have greater brightness which can be useful in outdoors. Contrast is best seen on AMOLED displays as in LCDs the backlight is always on even for the black areas in the image which tends to make it look grey. Where as in AMOLED the LEDs in the black areas of image can be completely shut down which gives deeper blacks. So it all depends upon you if you want to edit photos or videos or you are doing sketches on the device or any activity which requires use of colors to be accurate you may go with LCDs. But if you want to enjoy watching movies, videos, or want more efficient display you may go with AMOLEDs.
