With the KitKat update google combined hangouts with SMS. But lots of users complained about this and installed many other SMS apps.
Therefore in android lollipop they have reintroduced the SMS app.
It was previewed on nexus 9 by Google and it is trenched with material goodness. It has all bold colors and animations.
The SMS capabilities of hangouts still remains we have to see what Google has planned. Its default SMS and MMS app for lollipop.
The app is very basic. You can send images and voice notes very easily. The UI somehows reminds of the messenger app from Facebook. The animations doesn't always looks smooth there's a slight stutter.
It is available for download for 4.1+ devices you can try it for yourselves.
