Microsoft plans to provide free internet across India

According to a report in Hindustan times, Microsoft has decided to use the "white space" (the unused spectrum between two TV channels), to provide free internet connection.

Microsoft is seeking permission to kick-start the project in two major districts as of now and would cost $1.2 billion (approx.) to connect 250,000 gram panchayats via optic fibre cables, thereby providing digital infrastructure as to every citizen and provide necessary services on demand.

Bhaskar Pramanik, chairman, Microsoft India, explains

WiFi has a range of only about 100 metres, whereas the 200-300 MHz spectrum band available in the white space can reach up to 10 km,

This spectrum belongs mainly to Doordarshan and the government and is not used at all. We have sought clearance for a pilot project in two districts.
the initiative will help bring Internet accessible to a vast population a cost-effective manner.

If this project runs successful this could boost county's lack of digital infrastructure and can contribute greatly to the Narendra Modi's 'Digital India' vision. The plan was approved by the Modi Cabinet on August 30 and would be implemented in phases from this year till 2018.
