A video posted on google developers YouTube page stated the upcoming update to play services. The new 6.5 update will bring new APIs for Google drive, Google fit, and google Wallet. This will bring changes to the existing apps.
You can now add both public and application private custom file properties to a Drive file which can be used to build very efficient search queries and allow apps to save information. Plus you can also manually cancel uploads. The new API allows to choose the conditions you want for syncing which could save a lot of resources.
Google fit has better control over the sensors and will record data more accurately and in a more productive way.
A very big update includes the new Google maps API which now has a new toolbar plus a new lite mode which is a static image with less data that means it doesn't requires consistent data exchange it also saves all the layers. Which can be toggles.
The new google wallet API there will be a new "donate with google button" which will allow you to donate directly from your google wallet account
For developers-
With play services 6.5, there is new Granular Dependency Management with which you’ll be able to depend only on a minimal common library and the exact APIs your app needs.
There is also the new SDK to work with so developers could use the new APIs to make better, efficient and more productive apps. The play services will update itself in the background
