While many (most actually) of the people are waiting for marshmallow update (blame fragmentation), Google already released preview of it's newer update. Which is not named yet (you're welcome to guess)
These are the changes i noticed in the first 12 hours of using it. (Sadly i couldn't get it on my nexus 5, which pissed many users, let's just hope we get the final version. Else, hail custom ROMs)
Google made getting the preview easier than before all you need to do is sign the beta program and you get the preview as an update
(I won't suggest to use it as a daily driver because many apps may break and crash)

[Note] This is only the first preview build. These features may change or completely disappear in later or final version of the android 'N'
-Multi window, biggest and highly anticipated feature to the new version. (Thanks on behalf of all tablet users). It worked amazingly considering it was still in beta. Double tap to recent button now lets you quickly switch between apps. The cards have been made larger but that's just a cosmetic change and some may like it or not.
-there's picture in picture mode which lets you show content on android TV while you browse your phone(which i haven't tried yet)

-settings app is now completely redesigned tab now displays data without going into respective app, for instance it calculates how much storage you have on your phone and displays under storage tab so you don't have to open it.
-small UI changes in battery and data usage tabs basically google made it looked better (not that it was bad before)

-Redesigned popup menus like Ability to kill and restart the app or to stop it untill next reboot when an app crashes.
-changes in the DND, buried in the system UI tuner

-you get native DPI scaling so no need to change build prop (which is one of the top 3 reasons i root my phone)
-Dark mode is back with automatic timer and there's also blue light filter. Kind of wish it was pitch black for AMOLED screens to save on that precious battery. (But hey! Something is better than nothing)
-You also get native support to change color temperature of screen (so no need to flash custom kernels)
-Quick toggles and notifications have been completely redesigned and are more functional than ever and displays as much information as possible in a most beautiful way.
-notifications now show up as a page instead of cards as previous versions of android
-You can now easily add or remove your desired toggles straight from the drop down menu instead of system tuner as apposed to marshmallow. You can also add more pages to the drop down menu itself
-Long press on respective toggles takes you to their respective tabs also long press on torch toggle now gets you into camera app
-as notifications are now bundled. you can take actions straight from notification shade for a specific message by expanding the individual app. You can also reply to mesages in hangouts apps for now. Developers can now implement quick reply in their apps now.

-there is improvement to doze mode which now also works if the device is not stationary and will kick in when the screen is turned off.
-there's an addition of a data saver which disables background services of apps when you're using mobile data and automatically allows usage when WiFi is connected
-there's new feature which displays your emergency info into your lockscreen. You just need to fill a form in the profile and choose what to display. For eg - you can display your allergies and conditions which healthcare professionals or emergency services may need in chance of accidents. This is a great feature and should be made standard in all OS
-there are changes made to the ART compiler itself so there's no "optimising apps" screen everytime. (Good news for xposed framework users). App install will take lesser time than before now.
-number blocking is now more robust and the list is now associated with your account so it's synced across devices and can be restored after factory resets. It also blocks text messages along with calls. This list can be accesed by other apps too.
-there's a new service named call screening which is self explanatory. And gives users the option to ignore notification of certain calls or add the call to the call history (talk with your SO as much times as you want now).

-there's also addition of new language support always useful for bilingual people
