Google is working to bring Allo to desktop

Google's communications vice president tweeted a sneak peak of Allo working on desktop. This is still in development phase.

So far there are millions of users of this app. but it still lacks a lot of features which are available in WhatsApp. Google doesn't seem to like the idea of a unified messaging app.

They also renamed Google messenger app (SMS only) which is now android messages. it will also support RTF. and will be default messaging app for android.

Combining Allo and messenger would've made more sense, as more people will use it because it will come pre-installed.
