Android 5.0 : what's new

Android lollipop The latest version of Google android OS the version number is 5.0
The new OS was teased at the Google i/o and the preview was made available for the developers and OEM's as the guideline so that they can start making or updating their apps earlier to the new so called "material design" this was a change from the "holo" which is existing since many updates

The lollipop has now flatter has shadows and is more interactive than ever there are many animations and use of colors in the UI. The whole idea is that the UI to be like a paper and the contents displayed as ink. This is the biggest change in the UI since the froyo. Many apps were updated before the launch with material design which gave an early indication of what the OS might look and feel (like Google chrome or playstand app)

Boot animation:

• First thing you notice that's changed is the boot animation. When you boot up the device you'll see the updated boot animation it's simple yet beautifully made. 

Lockscreen:

• The lockscreen was also teased at the i/o now all your notifications are displayed on the lockscreen which you can click and you will be taken in the app. 
• From swiping from left you can access the dialer and when you swipe from right you can access the camera. 
• To unlock the phone you just need to swipe up.

Status bar:

• The status bar is now dynamic the icons are more compact and when you go into an app it automatically adapts the app color to blend into the app

Quick toggles:

• When you swipe down you will see that the notification centre doesn't takes up the whole screen. It only comes upto half and when you again swipe down you'll get the all the toggles. 
• The icons are white and flat Google also added the auto rotate toggle.

Notifications:

• When you're in an app which has taken up the whole screen (for eg: games) and you get a call you will get a small floating window on the top of screen so can choose to accept or decline the call and continue playing the game (heads up notifications)
• You can prioritize the notification according to time that means you can choose which notifications you get from lets say 11pm to 8am

Battery:

• The new update is said to extend your battery upto 90 minutes (project volta)
• It includes the all new ART runtime which handles tasks more quickly than dalvik and the app scheduler API which schedules the wakeups of the apps so that the you get single wakeup of all apps instead of multiple wakeups
• .You can also see the estimated time your phone would last so you can know when to find your charger

Security:

• With Lollipop update you will get encryption turned on as default to help you protect your data incase it is lost or stolen
• You can also pair your device to unlock at when near a android wear

Performance:

• You now have ART as default runtime which will boost the performance upto 4 times and you'll get smoother UI
• Handling background services much more efficiently
• Lollipop will support the 64-bit processors Java language apps run as 64-bit apps automatically and apps like
•  Chrome, Gmail, Calendar, Google Play Music will be adapted

Multimedia:

• The latency is now much lower not as close to Apple's but its improved. Which means you'll also see many audio and karaoke apps
• Multichannel audio processing
• New version of openGL (3.1) will enhance the graphics
• Audio via USB
• Android beam now supports all file formats

Many camera improvements:

• It can now take photos in RAW and YUV formats which stores all the image metadata
• More control over camera hardware

User Interface:

• Lollipop is based on what Google calls it "the material design"
